Construction

Tack trunks are going to get wet, sit in the dirt at horse shows, endure extreme temperature changes, and get abused in general. While most tack trunks look good when they are new, over time they just don't hold up to the punishment. The things that determine how well a trunk will hold up really come down to the materials used, construction and joinery methods, hardware, and the finish.

All of our tack trunks are made with high quality hardwoods, heavy duty hardware, and finished with several coats of marine spar urethane. Below are some of the standard features found on all of our tack trunks that make them durable, practical, and beautiful.

Wood

The Baltic Birch is a 9 layer plywood that is made with waterproof glue. This makes it extremely durable, and weather resistant. It won't delaminate or peel apart over time like oak or other hardwood veneered plywoods.

Finish

The entire tack trunk is finished with a marine spar urethane finish. This finish is designed for outdoor use and has UV blockers to help prevent fading. The exterior is high gloss, and the interior is finished in semi-gloss.

  Sliding Tray

Sliding Tray

All of our tack trunks come with a large removable sliding tray. It is made from 9-ply Baltic Birch, using rabbet, dado, and dowel construction, finished with a semi-gloss marine urethane.

Construction & Joinery

Construction & Joinery

All panels are precisely fit together using rabbet and dado joints,100% waterproof glue, then doweled for superior strength. The floor of the trunk is also raised ¾" to keep it off the moist ground.

  Heavy Duty Lid Stays

Heavy Duty Lid Supports

Our tack trunks have two lid supports that assist in opening the lid, holding the lid open, and allow the lid to close slowly. No more smashed fingers or slamming lids.

Dowel Construction

Doweling

Doweling is one of the strongest methods of joining pieces of wood together. All of our tack trunks are constructed using dowels and biscuits.

  Hard Maple Corners

Corners

All four corners of the lid and base are made from a hard maple block doweled into place. This gives added protection to the corners, as well as contribute to the unique look and design of our horse tack trunks.

Solid Brass Hasp

Solid Brass Hasp

The hasp is a heavy duty marine 3¾" solid brass mechanism. The eye is large enough to fit most padlocks, and it won't crush when it gets banged.

  Heavy Duty Handles

Heavy Duty Handles

These oversized handles (5'' x 3¾'') are made specifically for heavy trunks. The grip is nearly 1" thick and stops at 90 degrees so you won't pinch your fingers when lifting a heavy load.

Heavy Duty Hinges

Heavy Duty Hinges

These heavy duty 3" hinges are inset and will keep the lid on straight. They won't twist, or get out of shape like a piano hinge. When closed, the lower lip of the tack trunk fits up into the lid to prevent water and dust from entering the trunk.

  Nickel Feet

Nickel Feet

These nickel feet with a rubber cushion keep your tack trunk off the floor, and make it easier to slide. They will allow airflow under the trunk and help protect the finish on the bottom edges.
